“The true value of a volunteer, priceless”

by Chrissy Jarvie, Communications Lead

“When it comes to the value of a volunteer, there’s a quote from Sherry Anderson I’ve always felt captures it perfectly: “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.”

Annually in April when we celebrate National Volunteer Week, I come back to this quote and the word priceless. To me, it’s not an exaggeration, but an absolute truth.

At Caledon Community Services (CCS), volunteers are integral to every program and service area. From our fundraising events to transportation and our Evolve retail stores and beyond, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. The hard work they put in and the passion and dedication they demonstrate is truly inspiring and I enjoy hearing their stories and making deep, long-lasting connections.

Andrea Coles, our Volunteer Resource Specialist, shared a story about a firsttime student volunteer at the Exchange over March break that brought smiles to our faces. During his first shift, he made a special connection with a member of the staff team who took the time to talk to him and make him feel appreciated. He carried this early inspiration through all his volunteer shifts, took initiative and learned as much as possible about CCS. We’ve made a lifelong friend in him.

It’s stories like this that are wonderful reminders to all of us to say thank you and to make the effort to create valuable volunteer experiences, not just as we celebrate volunteer week, but in every interaction. A reminder to always strive to ensure our volunteers feel appreciated and embraced because they are, in a word, “priceless.”

From all of us at CCS, we thank all our volunteers from the bottom of our hearts. Your amazing, caring spirit makes our community very special.

If you are reading this we urge you to consider the benefits of volunteering with us. There are a wide variety of exciting opportunities, including our upcoming Velocity cycling event and would love you to join us.

Email volunteer@ccs4u.org or call 905-584-2300 ext. 277 to get involved and start making a difference today. Andrea would welcome your call and be pleased to help you explore your interest in changing lives in Caledon.
