Giving back comes in many forms
By Robyn Wilkinson
‘Tis the season of giving.A time to share in the joys of the season and lend a helping hand to make sure all those around you have something to celebrate as well.
But how can you help?
One curious resident inquired about that very question last week. He wanted to be able to “give†at Christmas time, but not in terms of presents and such monetary things, but rather of himself and his time.
Finding out where to start proved a challenge, with the “where†being the main predicament.
You don’t have to look very far when you want to help as there are a number of community-run volunteer programs offered right here in our own backyard, too many to count, actually.
Through Caledon Community Services, the Santa Fund, Caledon Meals on Wheels, Volunteer MBC, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, local service clubs like the Rotary and Kinsmen, you’ll be sure to find the right fit tailored to your volunteering needs and schedule.
Giving during the holidays can come in many forms.
It can be in packaging and sorting of gifts and food to give out to families through the Santa Fund, by offering a safe ride home, caring for animals at the local shelter, delivering hot meals to tables of Caledon families over the Christmas season, or even spending a lunch-hour getting to know a young person through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring program.
The possibilities of how you can help are virtually endless because how you spend your time giving back is completely up to you.
One organization in need of volunteers in the coming weeks is Home James, which provides transportation to people who may have had too much to drink and are in need of a ride home. If you have some time to spare the evenings of Dec. 30 and 31, Home James may be a good fit for your volunteering needs.
But regardless of where and how you end up giving back this holiday season, or the amount of hours you’re able to spare, keep in mind that your efforts spent helping those around you will be the greatest gift of all.
