Summer Student Series Part 2: Spotlight on Ellen Zagar

by Cassandra Briscoe, CCS Volunteer

(This 6-part series explores the day in a life of six 2017 CCS summer students. A new feature will appear here each month.)

Ellen Zagar spent her summer working as the Community Outreach Assistant with the Communications and Marketing team at Caledon Community Services (CCS).

The 18-year-old student completed her foundation year program, studying ancient and contemporary texts at the University of King’s College in Halifax. Ellen plans to major in contemporary studies and philosophy or English.

For many years, Ellen has been interested in environmental issues with a passion for agriculture and food security. She shares another passion for literature and philosophy, which she believes tied into her summer position at CCS.

Growing up in Caledon, Ellen had heard about CCS and when she was looking for summer jobs, the organization caught her eye. “I never realized we had such a vast social service network right here in Caledon,” she said.

Ellen knew a summer job at CCS would be a great way to get involved with social services in her own community while working for a great organization.

Working in an office setting was a new experience for Ellen and she believes it prepares you for a future job in any field.

“You learn small skills like going to meetings, sending emails, conversing with people and working as a team or in a group setting,” she said.

Being part of the Communications and Marketing team specifically taught Ellen how to connect with people and be aware of your audience. She got to meet various people through CCS, which made for great networking opportunities.

Ellen enjoyed being able to work for an organization that provides service to the community like CCS. “It’s been nice to work for my hometown and I feel like I’ve made a difference for the community.”

Although she attends university on the east coast, Ellen always considers Caledon home. “I love all the learning I get to do while I’m away at school, but working at CCS gave me a drive to do more for the community and I enjoyed helping in any way I could over the summer.”

At CCS, the community’s needs have been our focus since 1971. We strive every day toward achieving, ‘A healthy, engaged, compassionate community for ALL.’ To learn more, call 905-584-2300 or visit 18 King St. E., Bolton or www.ccs4u.org.
